Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) in Miami, Florida

Return to Florida Body Contouring overview.

Tummy Tuck FloridaAbdominoplasty, more commonly referred to as a “tummy tuck” in the Miami area, is one of the most popular procedures for both men and women. Where liposuction removes unwanted fat, tummy tuck surgery can remove excess skin and correct problems with the underlying abdominal musculature to give you a flatter, firmer, tighter stomach and thinner waist as well. If you have loose or extra skin on your abdomen, or bulging of the abdomen, a tummy tuck may be the procedure for you.

Tummy tuck is a major surgery that can deliver major results. Patients considering tummy tuck surgery in Florida will be shown that the procedure can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen and completely rejuvenate your tummy at the expense of a fine-line scar that is hidden beneath your underwear or bikini. Often, part of the total cost can be covered by medical insurance.

If you are considering a tummy tuck to enhance your appearance, this page will answer some of the most common questions we receive from Florida patients. Of course we can't answer all of your questions online, so we encourage you to schedule your courtesy consultation with out office as soon as you are ready.

Am I good candidate for tummy tuck surgery?

You are a good candidate for tummy tuck surgery with Dr. Ellenby in Miami, Florida if:

  • you are in relatively good shape
  • you are bothered by a fat deposit, loose abdominal skin, or a bulging abdomen that won't respond to diet or exercise

An abdominoplasty directly addresses the problems of loose skin and muscle laxity by tightening the muscles and removing excess skin and fat to tighten and restore your abdominal contour. Often suction of excess fat tissue is performed at the same time.

Abdominoplasty is particularly helpful to women who, through multiple pregnancies, have stretched their abdominal muscles and skin beyond the point where they can return to normal. Loss of skin elasticity in older patients, which frequently occurs with slight obesity, can also be improved. People who have lost significant weight and have skin laxity are also excellent candidates for a tummy tuck.

Some people are good candidates for a tummy tuck even when they don't fit neatly into one of the categories mentioned above. The best way to determine if the procedure will work for you is to request your courtesy consultation with Dr. Ellenby at his plastic surgery practice in Aventura, Florida. Often, a significant part of the cost can be covered by medical insurance.

What should I expect from tummy tuck surgery?

Expect a tighter, flatter tummy with a fine-line scar you can hide below your underwear or bikini. Abdominoplasty can improve both your appearance and your self-confidence. Not every procedure delivers results that meet a patient's ideal, and before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and your motivations and discuss them fully and openly with Dr. Ellenby.

How is tummy tuck surgery performed?

All procedures are performed as an outpatient under general anesthesia in a fully accredited and certified outpatient surgery center, using only board-certified anesthesiologists.

Most patients require a traditional or full abdominoplasty that entails removing all or most of the skin and fat between the pubic hair and belly button and tightens the lax abdominal muscles underneath. The full tummy tuck improves the appearance of the entire abdomen, tightening the upper and lower belly while tapering the waistline. The scar from a full abdominoplasty generally extends from hip to hip, concealed beneath your underwear or bikini line. The exact length of the scar will vary from patient to patient.

For some people a partial or mini-tummy tuck may be all that is necessary to achieve the desired result. A small percentage of patients are good candidates for this procedure that reduces skin and excess fat just in the lower abdomen (below the belly button). Mini-tummy tuck surgery results in a shorter scar but does not address issues with the upper abdomen, which na be improved with liposuction.

What if I have scars from a C-section, hysterectomy or stretch marks?

Generally, most stretch marks are removed by a tummy tuck. Some stretch marks on the upper abdomen may still remain after the procedure, but are less visible when down to a lower position. Any low, transverse scar from another procedure such as a C-section, hysterectomy, or appendectomy will be removed during a tummy tuck.

Can I combine other procedures at the same time as a tummy tuck?

Healthy patients can combine procedures such as liposuction, breast augmentation, and breast lift with their tummy tuck surgery.

Complete financial information, credit card payment options and financing programs, and determination of possible insurance coverage will be discussed during your courtesy consultation.
