What should I expect from breast augmentation?

Immediately after your surgery you may feel some discomfort or tenderness, but this subsides in a short time. You should be able to return to work within a week.

Your breasts will probably be sensitive to direct stimulation for two to three weeks, so you should avoid excessive physical activity and contact. After that, there are no limitations usually about three weeks after surgery.

Your scars, about an inch in length, will be firm and pink for a short time and be hidden on the undersurface or crease beneath the breast. After several months, your scars will begin to fade and be minimally apparent, although they will never disappear completely.

How is breast augmentation performed?

Dr. Ellenby will make small incisions in the crease on the underside of the breast. Through the incisions he will create a pocket underneath your chest wall muscle (the pectoral muscle) and place an implant in the pocket centered under the nipple. Placing the implant under the muscle ensures there is no interference with future breast examinations, ultrasounds, mammograms or biopsies. Following breast augmentation with implants under the muscle wall, you should also retain the ability to breast feed.

Dr. Ellenby uses both saline-filled breast implants and silicone gel implants. You can both decide together which choice is right for you.
